Stay Safe and Comfortable: The 5Ws of Power Management
The world we’re living in feels quite precarious these days.
Wildfire smoke is clogging us up and battles over a strait in the Middle East few of us had previously heard of are resulting in way-too-big numbers at the petrol pump. Everything seems in short supply. Grocery bills mimic a hiker climbing Mount Everest. Consumer confidence is low and the world of business seems to have pressed the pause button.
We see the number and intensity of storms increasing. According to an article entitled “Severe Weather is the New Normal” in Miller Insurance’s Spring 2026 issue of Risk and Business Magazine,
“in recent years, weather has shifted from something we simply deal with to something we must actively plan for. Across Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth, and Wellington counties, severe weather events are becoming more frequent—and the financial impacts are becoming harder to ignore.”
Before we become too much of a Debbie Downer and depression rolls in, let us remind you that even amidst what seems like chaos, there is hope.
There are practical and proactive measures you can take. For instance, let’s talk about the 5Ws of power management.
Let’s start with What
You know that your home and business need power to exist. Without some form of energy input, your light bulbs, Keurig, and table saw would all be useless.
Power is necessary in our world so we can live with the conveniences we love. Whether your air conditioning stays on because of solar panels or thanks to the electrical grid, power management is about distribution, functionality, and maximizing efficiency.
Power management means
- energy isn’t wasted and consumption can be reduced
- an extended life for devices, systems, and networks
- Load balancing so that circuits aren’t overloaded, and that
- backup measures are in place for when unexpected surprises such as power disturbances when storms occur.

Why it’s a big deal
Now that you know what power management is and why you would want it, here’s why it is such a big deal.
“Energy consumption is rising exponentially with booming populations and increased per capita demand,” explains Owen Mulhern on Earth.org. Around the planet, humans use 320 billion kilowatt-hours of energy a day.
To put that into relatable terms, charging a Tesla takes between 60-100 kWh, which is twice what the average Canadian home uses in a day.
Energy can be inconsistent and unstable
The amount of energy we want and need to live our lives turns into an issue when the source of that energy is uncertain. In Ontario, Canada, as in the rest of the world, we have times when electricity suddenly becomes unavailable, meaning blackouts are inevitable.
Something as simple as a tree tumbling onto your power line can cause huge issues. Dan Gent, Director of Transmission and Reliability for Electricity Canada, explains that “One in five outages actually happen because of a tree. They have contributed over 90 million hours of interruptions”.
And that’s just downed trees. It doesn’t even take into consideration storms, outdated infrastructure, grid congestion, etc. The strain on the system is enormous, especially as summers become hotter and more humid, wind more damaging, and winters filled with a greater number of ice and snow blizzards.
“When these events happened previously, we’ve said, ‘Oh, it's a hundred-year storm’, but it's now happening every three years.” Dan Gent, Director of Transmission and Reliability.
Which means we need to be prepared.
Power management mitigates the challenges of power loss.
- Solar systems can be integrated to take on a greater primary or standby role when needed.
- Energy can be conserved when outages happen.
- You don’t need to line up behind the rest of your community hoping there is enough gas left in the pumps for you and your generator.
While everyone else is counting down the minutes until their beef roasts thaw and stink up the freezer, you’ll be comfortably curled up with peace of mind, drinking your coffee, watching your big screen, and listening to your load of towels tumble about the dryer.
Power management is about saving energy, devices, networks, money and, more importantly, being prepared for emergencies.
